On a cold Saturday morning in December, nearly 100 New York City teens filled China Beacon in Chinatown, not for a rally or rehearsal, but to practice something just as powerful: speaking up. Through a partnership between Toastmasters and the YMCA of Greater New York, students participating in the Teens Take New York initiative spent 90 energetic minutes sharpening their communication skills and exploring what leadership really looks like.
Finding Confidence, One Question at a Time
The workshop brought together 11 Toastmasters from Districts 119 and 46, who guided students in grades 6–12 through fast-paced speaking exercises inspired by Toastmasters’ Table Topics. Divided into small groups, teens tackled impromptu questions about their communities, democracy, and issues they care about — no notes, no scripts, just their own ideas. The result was a room buzzing with confidence, creativity, and thoughtful conversation.
A Partnership with Purpose
The partnership began when Suzanne Schwartzberg of MINY Toastmasters connected with Nicole Cruz, Senior Director of Citywide Teen Programs at the YMCA. Working alongside Elaine Rogers, President of the MINY Toastmasters club, they designed a session that aligned perfectly with Teens Take New York’s mission—helping young people develop policy proposals and prepare for interviews with NYC government officials.
Investing in Tomorrow’s Leaders
By the end of the session, it was clear this was more than a workshop; it was a launchpad. The day highlighted how community partnerships and practical communication skills can empower the next generation to lead, advocate, and be heard.
Heartfelt thanks
A hearty round of applause for the following Toastmasters for making the event a resounding success:
