Does your Club need a club coach?
The Club Coach Program has changed and we need you!
The Club Coach Program allows experienced Toastmasters members to assist in rebuilding club membership and restoring club quality. A successful club coach will:
- Build rapport with club officers and members
- Instill enthusiasm, camaraderie, and structure within the club
- Assess the club environment and recommend best practices for success
- Work with club officers to develop a Club Success Plan
- Motivate the club to strive for Distinguished Club Program (DCP) recognition
Coaches who help clubs achieve Distinguished status (or higher) in the Distinguished Club Program will receive credit in the education program and a digital certificate of accomplishment.

Cervantes TM’s Club News
Cervantes – Manhattan’s only All Spanish Toastmasters Club started the 2021-2022 toastmasters’ year off with less than 8 members and seeking a club coach. Although, the club had thriving meetings which were well attended by the members, they struggled with increasing their membership. That’s when Club member, Mandy Sha took on the responsibility of serving as the Club Coach. Together with the leadership of the club President, Emilie Valencia the club produced a YouTube video for social media, where every member in the club participated. The video was submitted for the district 119 incentive program “Start the Conversation campaign”. The Club leadership had also organized and promoted an open house event. The dedication and hard work paid off!
Cervantes – Manhattan’s only All Spanish Toastmasters Club went from having less than 8 members to becoming a Distinguished Club!
Cervantes’ success is also reflective of their supportive leadership. I would like to acknowledge Area 14 Director, Jennifer Morgan for her exemplary leadership.
Thank you all for your commitment to service and excellence.
Melvin Garlick, DTM
District 119 Club Growth Director 2021-2022
Brooklyn’s Best Gavel Club
My Gavel Experience
Although I dreamt of it casually over the years, I didn’t think it could possibly happen.
Could I be instrumental in establishing a Gavel Club in a local private High School?
After all, it has been a challenging 22 years partnering with other great leaders to just keep our club afloat.
Well funny how things work out because the High School in my dreams reached out to me to do just that and to my surprise, 9 other club members at Brooklyn’s Best were enthusiastic about all of us giving it a shot. And now after three strong months of running the club week after week, we ended the semester with a blast.
At our semester-ending session, 20 students stood up and gave verbal testimony in a clear and organized fashion, using body language and strong eye contact to say that although fearful at first they loved speaking in public, and they know they developed new skills and that they look forward to rejoining next year in September.
I feel privileged to have participated in this and give credit to our area director Josephine Mc Farlane for introducing me to Fern Rashkover who has years of experience working with the youth. As well as to my fellow Brooklyn’s Best Toastmasters who stood by me and offered assistance when it was needed. They are Nellie Haddad, Nazira Shabot, Terri Harrari, Miriam Kairey, Rebecca Maleh, Yaakov Brody, Sarina Roff’e, DTM, Allegra Mamiye, Karen Erani, and Vic Diddia.
I hope that in September we can start it up and maybe even do the same at another local High School. Stay tuned.

If you choose to join a club there are two types of clubs:
Closed and Open Clubs
A Closed Club is open only to members of a specific company or community.
An Open Club is available to anyone who wishes to apply for membership in that club. Corporate Clubs – most Corporate Clubs are closed, however, there are a few corporate clubs
that are open to other professionals who wish to apply for membership.
Other Closed Clubs – consist of members of a particular religious, school, or community
organization.
Advanced Clubs – they require members to attain an advanced level in the Toastmasters’
educational program before someone can apply for membership.
Specialty Clubs – open clubs that are geared toward members with special interests such as
reading, humor, etc.
The majority of our clubs in District 119 are Open Community Clubs that welcome membership
applications from the public.
